The useful version of this alert is threshold-based rather than reporting every small fluctuation — rankings move slightly all the time, and an alert for every point of movement quickly becomes noise nobody reads.

Catching a drop early matters because the cause is easier to diagnose close to when it happened — a site change, a competitor's move, or an algorithm update are all easier to connect to a drop within days than weeks later.
