Average Position
Average position is the metric Google Search Console reports for a keyword: the mean ranking across every device, location, and personalization state that produced an impression over the selected date range.
It's a real, Google-reported number, and it's useful for spotting trends — but it isn't the position any single person actually saw. A keyword sitting at "average position 6.2" might mean it consistently ranks 6th, or it might mean it swings between 2nd on mobile in one country and 11th on desktop in another, averaging out to the same number.
The distinction matters most when a decision hinges on where a page ranks right now, in one specific place — which average position can't answer on its own.
